My Coop
My Coop
hello. i appreciate any help with this. i bit the bullet and just ordered an 8x12 chicken coop with covered run since my husband and i are NOT handy. my dad can help with small projects, but he is getting older and doesn't live nearby so i didn't want to bother him with that big of a project (although he is appalled at the price 😂) . the coop itself is 8x5 and will have a plywood floor. the run is 7×8 i want to use the deep litter method and would prefer not to rot my floor.

i have been perusing my options and have seen blackjack 57 mentioned as well as stick down linoleum tiles. however, if possible, i would prefer to use extra materials we have lying around (they are free and i hate to send them to the landfill). i know we have a box of waterproof vinyl laminate flooring left over from a project (click together type, pic attached). we also have a couple boxes of slate floor tiles (however, grouting is not in the picture and cutting seems problematic so not sure these would work well). i am not sure if i could incorporate or use either of those in any way for the floor or poop boards or something else. any ideas?

You have poop boards. Why are you trying DLM in the coop? The two do not go hand in hand.
I have poop boards. I change the coop floor bedding once a year. All I did was paint the floor (and the poop boards for that matter) with 2 coats of Behr Porch and Floor paint that I got for $9 in the Oops! paint section. That would be my recommendation.

thank you! i have been doing a lot of reading and thought people used both. there are not poop boards already installed so i would need to add them if i needed them.

I HIGHLY recommend them.
2' wide with roost centered down the middle. I have lips on mine to keep the contents where I want them.

During use. You can see how they catch everything regardless which way the chicken is facing.

so you think poop boards are better for inside the coop? i want to avoid completely replacing bedding often. that will probably get expensive quickly.
Absolutely. I use a thin layer of granulated Sweet PDZ on the boards and scoop them each morning. I have a compost bin the full bucket goes to.

What coop did you buy? What’s the flooring now?

its through a shed company. the floor is plywood or whatever sheds come with. we custom ordered but like this one with added ventilation. probably going to need to flip that roost and move it higher.
