Just wanted to stop by and say hello before I head over to some of the boards to ask some questions :) My family is new to backyard chickening and we are head over heels for our little flock! We ordered 6 Buff Orpington pullets in April and received them when they were just a day or two old. As they grew, it became obvious that one of our ladies was in fact a man, and I spent about a week bummed out over that before realizing that having a Roo could be a really good thing. And our Roo was a gem! We just loved him and the girls did too. Last night, we think he had a heart attack and passed away, and we are so, so sad. We miss his studly strut, his newly-perfected crow, and his watchful eye over his girls. I joined BYC so I could investigate the possibility of adding another guy to our flock, but I am sure I'll have many other questions along the way. Thanks so much for having me!

Welcome to BYC! There are quite a few of us crazy chicken ladies here.

Sorry about your little cockerel. It is nice to have a rooster in a flock if you can. They add a wonderful social dimension. Adding a male to an all female flock can be much easier than integrating new hens, so I don't think you will have much trouble. Read about quarantining to prevent bringing diseases into your flock and take your time and wait for the right rooster. Make sure he is not aggressive toward people, especially if you have children around. There are lots of people with unwanted roosters looking for good homes, so you should have lots to choose from. Make sure you really want to hear crowing at 5am, though!

What a beautiful flock. So sorry for your loss. Hope you will be able to find another GOOD roo to fill his shoes. Welcome to Backyard chickens. Once you have 20 posts you can participate in the BYC Buy, sell , trade forum. There are usually a good number of roosters/cockerels offered, many times show or breeding quality. Due to the glut of roosters looking for new homes, prices tend to be very reasonable.

Aww, that's sad. :( I hope you find a perfect new guy for the girls. Ask a lot of questions from who you buy from. Take note if they inviting you into the chicken area..they shouldn't, and you really don't want to go into anyone Else's chicken runs or area. When you get him home, keep him separated for a while to make sure that he is well. Wouldn't want to lose any more of those beauties from an illness brought in.
