Mychicks are about 4 weeks old. Not real sure on exact age as these were from another person that got them at TSC and then changed their mind. LOL I have a wire cage pen built outside and a pet carrier for them to get in if they want. Will this setup be ok? I will watch (laughing) at their antics in a bigger space today. If all seems to go well I will leave them out and see what happens. Will they pick grit up out of the dirt? I am still feeding starter and grower. What is your opinions on this first outing. It will be close to 70 today nights are around 40 or so. They are not completely feathered out but lots are coming on great. They are just getting so crowed in the brooder that I thought they might like the adventure. Thanks for your advice and opinions. I am nervous as I am a new "Dad" and dont want ANYTHING bad for the babies.

I did the very same thing today!
My girls are 6 weeks old and they had their first real adventure outside. I think it's great for them to get out and explore.
Just make sure you keep an eye on them. At this age, they can be taken by hawks quite easily. Also - if your wire cage is temporary, any predator can knock it down in an instant. So, I just stayed outside with my girls for awhile as they explored.
Make sure you take some pics, Dad. I bet they're soooo cute!

Are you thinking of letting them sleep out there? If so, please make sure it's predator proof. You want to keep 'em safe.
Good luck!

Thanks Jen. My pen is a permanant structure. I have chicken wire all the way around. It is over the top and covers the bottom. I tell you....... I dont want anything happening to them. It has been awhile since I have had chickens on my farm and now I know why I missed them so much.

Do you think this will be good and the temps are ok? Thanks again Jen. They will probably be mad at me later for constantly checking opn them. Thats MY job though.

I'm not 100% sure about the exact temps. I am new to chickens. But from what I have read, if your girls are fully feathered, they should be warm enough at night.
Maybe what you could do is bring them back inside into the brooder at night for a few more weeks. That way you can be certain they're warm enough.
That may be overly cautious.
If you think its OK and they seem happy - then go for it.

let em' out:)
I use a round baby pen for outings. The temp is fine . Make sure there is food and water.
your good I find they grow faster once they start going out.
