New Desert Chicken Owner

Hi all!
I just found out yesterday that my landlord will let us have chickens!! So I'm researching like mad and getting my little plot ready for chickens. If you have any advice for raising chickens in New Mexico, I would love to hear it! I'm a first time chicken owner and I mostly want layers but will eventually add some meat birds as well.
