Stumbled onto the site and was amazed at the wealth of information. Thanks to all for that. I have had chickens in the past, but it has been many years. The economy has not been kind to me or my family in the last few years, sooooooo... gardening and becoming more self sufficient has become a priority as well as a necessity. Chickens fit into this nicely. Any low budget suggestions are welcomed.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had chickens 40 years ago and greatly enjoyed them, when I could keep the racoons off them.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None now, but hope to set up a coop and yard this spring for maybe a dozen ladies and maybe as many meaties.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I had some barred rocks that were huge. They lived on a dairy farm when I worked there. The rooster was every bit of three feet tall. I also had a coop of about a dozen mixed ladies with a mean silkie rooster. This was the flock the racoons liked so much.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
One of the blogs had a link, sorry I don't remember which one.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Learning to live on the least resources and stocking up on the things needed. These preparations are what allows me to live with little or no income now. I don't see things getting better anytime soon. I was worried before about not being able to find a job, but they say at my age, if you don't find work within about 6 months you should consider yourself retired. So I'm not unemployed, I'm retired. Makes me feel so much better.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My Lady and I live in an empty nest, kids all grown and gone, in a house that has grown into more than we need, but allows us to store waaaayyy too much "stuff." Going to college to occupy my mind and time.

My best to all, and look forward to reading the information on the forum

Welcome from NC! It seems a lot of people are becoming more self-sufficient these days. That's why we decided it was time to bring the farm back to life! Enjoy your new chickens!
