I'm so Eggcited to be a part of this great community of Chicken-People!
We're just getting started with our little farmette on 2 acres by a COOL stream here in the beautifull foothills of North Carolina. We started with 5 ducks that we got to enjoy watching swim on the creek.Much time and work was spent building a pen and coop to try and keep the ducks from just swimming or flying away whenever they chose.Once they were released for their first swim in the stream, the ducks have NEVER returned to the safety of the pen.A duck on the open water is IMPOSSIBLE to catch! All the ducks have stayed around and remain a big part of our farm life. The stream is perfect for them-Duck Heaven!
Then the question became what to do with the empty coop/pen?We decided to try our hand at raising chickens. Are we ever glad we did!NEVER did we ever imagine how many varieties of beautiful birds were available.Browsing the net and finding this site among others, we were delighted to find lots of like-minded folks willing to help us discover how to make it all happen.
We now have a Black Austrolorp Rooster,2 Black Austrolorp Hens,2 Silver-Laced Wyandotte Hens (all about a year old),and 5 young pullets we raised from chicks-about 3 months old.Pullets are 2 Barred Rocks,a White Rock,a Buff Orphington, and a Black Austrolorp. That's TEN Chickens! We are determined not to get too many at first(a common mistake?)although we are constantly discovering new and different breeds that we would love to try!
Proud to be chicken farmers!Trying to do our best to give our new family members the best home possible!
hoping to hear from YOU soon!We welcome any and all comments and correspondence.See Ya! We'll be around.

Welcome to BYC. I'm in Forsyth County. Aren't we lucky to have such a beautiful, green state? I'm a ducky fan myself and our crested baby ducks are bigger than all the other chickens and ducks. Too funny. Now they try to make friends but the others run away. Looks like we'll need a bigger kiddie pool. Enjoy that farm.
