Hello everyone,
I know this doesn't apply to most folks, but if anyone on this board happens to live in Fitchburg, Mass., please help us pass our hen-keeping ordinance!
We are proposing something very basic, along the lines of Somerville's policy -- a $25 annual registration fee and educational materials through the Board of Health, no inspections, regulation only in response to complaints and basic, common-sense guidelines (recommended by the state) for coops and runs. The ordinance would allow for any homeowner to keep up to 6 hens -- currently only those with more than 5 acres can have them.
Please contact our city councilors and urge them to support this ordinance! Their email addresses and phone numbers are here: http://www.ci.fitchburg.ma.us/government/city-council/default.cfm
Or, come testify in favor at the next city council meeting -- 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Memorial Middle School Library, 615 Rollstone St.
Thank you, let me know if you have any questions and wish us luck! We want to pass a policy that is accessible, easy and sensible for all!
