Introduction:

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

New to chickens and enjoying it so far. We started our flock this spring with eight ISA Browns and 15 probable Easter Eggers (sold as Ameraucanas). No roosters.

(2) How many chickens do y have right now? (3) What breeds do you have?
We went from 23 hens down to 17. Two of the EE chicks escaped the brooder and were never found (newbie mistake).

Two more EEs were lost to raccoons, confirmed with cameras. Those two are on me as well as I didn’t have the coop secured properly. That problem has been solved, and the perpetrators have been dealt with.

We lost one cross-beaked EE to natural causes. We were feeding a mush/porridge to her, but she just passed one night.

Lastly, we lost one of the Brownies this week to a roaming dog. We live in the country with good acreage, so they free-range during the day. I kept them in the coop for a couple of days after the attack until getting home from work. I’ve added more cameras to identify the dog if it returns.

The EEs aren’t laying yet, but we’re getting five to seven large to extra-large eggs per day from the Brownies.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

It’s just an awesome hobby. They are not much work, fun to watch, have really helped with tick control, and the eggs are amazing.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

We both still work, but we do a nice vegetable garden every year. Wife does a lot with the fiber arts, and I enjoy hunting and shooting sports.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I’m a professor of engineering, wife is a speech therapist. We have two house dogs (rescue mutts) and a house cat (picked up from a gas station parking lot as a kitten). We have a great little country life.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I was just searching the web for chicken info and wound up here. I’ve been lurking for a few months and thought I would introduce myself.
