Hi everyone!! I have stopped by this site so many times as I researched and learned about becoming a flock Mama! I am so excited to join and learn from everyone!

I just got my first chickens as day old pullets in early March. We built our coop during the quarantine, and are so excited to have our chick-mansion up and functional!!

To start, I ordered eight pullets, each a different breed. One has turned out to be a cockerel (much to my dismay) and we are desperately trying to re-home him (I just can't handle the discomfort the girls seem to be in when he mounts them!) I have a maran, orpingtons, Wyandotte, EE, and a green egger.

I am so entertained by these birds!! I enjoy their antics, their sounds, and all their personalities! We also have four highland cows on our farm (we started with the big beasts and then went small!) I also love to garden and have a fairly large plot that I try to tame into something edible each summer!

I am an elementary teacher, which is actually how I got hooked on chickens. For years I incubated chickens with my second graders and loved learning about the birds, their life cycle and sharing that with the kids! My husband is a beef grader and spends his day looking at carcasses, so raising our own cattle (just for fun, not for the freezer) has helped him to feel better about how he spends his days. We also make syrup, dry herbs, can vegetables and spend a lot of time on the porch inventing conversations that we think our bovines, canine, feline and now tiny raptors are having!

I appreciate all of you who share your experiences and expertise on here so that a newbie like me can learn how to be a responsible hobby farmer with happy, healthy animals!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

Hi there, i started in April disposing of an old, rather large fire wood rack my husband had built years ago. As i took it aparti started thinking i could reclaim all that wood and build a chicken coop. Several months later here i am with 5 cream legbar ladies in there! They are comical, sassy and cute! My pandemic project has become an obsession! 🤩
