Hello,
I do not raise my own chickens, but as a grandad of two grandkids that do, I get to build the coops.
That is what has brought me here.

I was raised on a farm in central Kansas in the 50's through the 70's and we pretty much raised everything we ate or made what we played with! Now days my grandkids have a different style as urban chicken herders and the coop must meet their requirements. And be varmit proof and have a few bells and whistles.

I have found a great coop here and will build it with a few mods. I will post results when I am done.
Great to be here, cheers.

Welcome to byc and hello from Kansas City! I can say as a local, predator proofing cannot be understated. I had two full flock wipeouts of younger birds this year that made me reinvent my entire way of chicken keeping with security in triplicate.
My grandkids had 6 young chickens killed earlier this year too. There was only a real small opening we found and the chicks could not get through it before the ambush. Do rats do this? Couldn't have been any larger and the remains were inside the coop.

My first set were killed by my neighbor's dog after it pulled apart a small corner of the run, the second by my best guess of a possum as it came through a small vent hole covered with wire and killed everyone. I don't know about rats, especially in multiple deaths, but maybe a weasel.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow Yes rats can kill chicks and get through a hole around a half inch. Also they can chew through 1/4 welded wire. Generally, if you use half inch welded wire around the bottom and put an apron out about a foot, you can curtail predators. In the suburbs generally electric fence is out--but I do put 3 hot wires near the ground around my shelters with a half joule solar charger. Again, welcome to BYC and glad you joined us. I have 8 grand kids... :ya

I lost one to a multiple rat attack. It has been an on going battle. I have posted this in the pests and predators section. Sorry to hear that about your situation.
