My wife and I decided to get some chickens this spring both meat birds and some layers. We bought a mixed bunch of chicks on clearance at our local TSC for $1 each. Built brooders from old food grade IBC totes and put up a 10' x 20' chicken tractor. We have 79 birds Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Black Sexed, White Leghorn, Rhode Island Red and one other breed but I don't remember what it's called.
I'm planning on getting some Cornish cross and Freedom Ranger chicks in about a month or so and finish them out after we process the first batch. Then do a taste/cost analysis for myself on the different breeds.
