Hi all:

Just joined BYC and have been reading lots about chickens. Got our chicks yesterday and they seem to be doing well and are extremely cute! Would appreciate thoughts on coops for approx. 12 full size chickens. Not very experienced with tools but can put things together myself. What success have folks had with some of the kits out there? Need a coop that can survive new england winters. Also, would like to install a solar light kit rather than run an electrical wire. Any thoughts on build your own or kits would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chickens can tolerate the coldest of temps. So don't be in a hurry to install electricity for the heat. You want plenty of ventilation to whisp away the moisture from the breathing chickens and the poop. Adding any heat will only increase the moisture content of the coop.

Good luck on the building of your new coop! Chickens are a fun hobby!
