Hi everyone! I've been scrolling around here for a while now and decided that it looks fun to join. I'm female and currently have 5 beloved chickens - Betty, Silkie, Rooster, Sweet and Roseyface. Betty, Rooster and Sweet are pekins, Silkie's a Silkie (what an original name - haha!) and Rosey is some white farm chicken that was given to us as a juvenile when her leg was brutally broken in an encounter with a mongoose.
I've had chickens every now and then. They tend to come and go, especially since we have very bad problems with Genets (a European and African wild cat, part of the mongoose family) and several mongoose. We catch the little trouble makers in traps from time to time but of course, more keep refilling in their place. To more animal lovers out there - no, we do not kill the mongoose or genet when we catch them ^^
We got Sweet, Rooster and Silkie all st the same time from a breeder. Later, we decided that we wanted a hen and then got Betty. About a week later Rose was given to us.
Sweet (pekin hen)
This is a really sweet chicken, her most favorite thing to do is just bury her face in your neck and sleep for hours. A quiet, sociable baby. I very often call her Bubs.
Rooster (pekin rooster)
Must show off. Must be dominant. Must be the best. Rooster is a real little rooster, still a juvenile yet he struts around with such character. His favorite thing to do is to go and pick on and play with his best friend, Silkie. The two can jump around each other and spar for hours.
Silkie (silkie hen, at least we hope she's female)
Attitude. Must have attitude. Silkie's appearance suits her personality well, and, with her head held high, she must be on top of everything. This little hen just can't be dominated.
Betty (pekin hen)
Neatness. Everything has to be in place. How dare you smear your filth on this feminine hen by stroking her? Tsk tsk. The very thought is saddening. She will, however, higher your pathetic rank by spending just some small time in the day paying attention to you in return that you look upon her with royalty. But don't you dare touch the Betty. However, I do love her in the sense that she took on Silkie, Rooster and Sweet as her babies when my days were clogged up with too much work to forage with them in the garden every minute of the day. Although I'm sure she's planning on making them her servants someday.
Roseyface (unknown breed, hen)
This really is one of my favorites - a huge white hen with a broken leg. She outweighs and outsizes the rest of the pekins and silkie by a lot. Her ability to adjust to the new environment and routine since she was given to me is stunning. When I got her, she wasn't able to walk at all and I had to carry her everywhere she wanted to go. But now she hobbles after the others when they move to forage to a different place. I've really had my heart lifted by her strength.
Here's Sweet

Rose checking out what Betty has in her beak. Hence Rosey's broken right leg, it tends to move forward like that.

Silkie

Silkie on the far left, Rooster in the middle, Pekin behind him and Betty on the bottom right corner.
Sweet
Rooster and Silkie, always with her attitude
I hope that you enjoy these pictures and what I've written about my little flock c:
And I really hope that this is the right place to put this. If not, please tell me where!
I was also wondering what sort of breed Rosey might be? I suspected one of those regular chickens that you find in factories that people slaughter to eat, but I'm here on BYC and may as well ask ^^
I hope to spend much more time here on the future, and am stunned by how friendly and helpful everyone is on this site.
I hope to see you all around!
