Hello, I just ran across this site after coming to the realization that I might be able to actually have chickens in my house, so I started researching.

I live on the Gulf coast with a fair sized yard, I've been planting fruit trees and dabbling in gardening even though we're more of a waterfront community.

I think having two chickens would be plenty. We'd mainly only do it for the eggs, I can't see my wife attaching to her chickens and then eating them. A chicken coop would look pretty out of place in our neighborhood but I think if I were to make it look nice and I don't have a rooster, then the neighbors should be fine with it. We have no HOA and I've checked the ordinances.

I'm thinking that I would need a coop and runner on wheels so that I can move it around the yard. Right now we have a large lot that will eventually be turned into a pool and guest house, but until then...it's a big area for chickens.

The whole yard is fenced in, and if I can get my dogs used to the chickens we can let them out when we let the dogs out. We have to watch the dogs when we let them out because we're right on the water and a few times they've jumped into the canal.

I would have to have a sturdy coop, I know that we have black snakes and a rather crafty raccoon that likes to get into our garbage.

My three main questions at this point (while trying to think of where the coop will end up).

I have a lot of sea pines that shade one area of my yard, would the runner be ok if they spend all the time in the shade (besides the times that they are in the yard).

What would be the best construction to keep black snakes from getting in the coop?

We have little lizards all over the place, would the chickens be harmed by them?

Though, I guess I should ask my wife first

She's tolerated me putting fruit trees in every open spot I could find in the yard...I wonder what she'll think about chickens...especially considering she's the one who's home during the day to take care of them. She's an animal lover though...maybe two chicks for her birthday would sway her.

I was born & raised in Bradenton, FL - what part of Florida are you in?

To answer your questions:

I have a lot of sea pines that shade one area of my yard, would the runner be ok if they spend all the time in the shade (besides the times that they are in the yard)---->as long as they have adequate access to full sun, they'll be fine.

What would be the best construction to keep black snakes from getting in the coop?--->use hardware cloth along the bottom of the run & bury it a little too.

We have little lizards all over the place, would the chickens be harmed by them?--->actually, the chickens will probably do their darnest to eat the lizards!

I started out the same way, couple arces on East coast of FL. Wondered bout the chicks cause I'm one block into city limits, picked up 3 RIR's and now have 7 total(3 RIR's and 4 mixes) and love it. Just build a solid coop, I figured coon's, canes, and biblical rains (so it's gonna have to be a well built coop). It's just like anything in life the more you put into it the more you get out. Now my women tells me she has lost me the chickens, maybe she has, just kid'n... kinda. If your an animal lover it's super enjoyable!!! No regrets! Go Magic!

Oh btw 4 dawgs; 2 are good with the chicks and 2 are not, and I've had the chicks around 4 months... The hounds keep the preditors away but would like to mess with the chicks, well hopefully not but it's a catch 22 regardless, if you got little dogs proably won't help against coons. No animal human included want's to come into my fenced in yard. The pups are good when I'm around but when I leave, they are naughty. Best of luck!

from california. You should hedge your bets and get 4 or 5 chicks to begin; with chickens it is th more the merrier. And this way if one of two ends up being a roo you would have extras and could rehome the roo on craigslist.
And if you wanted the chickens "in your house", they do make chicken diapers.
