Hey all, just joined up to get help for one of my little chicks.

This forum seems to have tons of good info, so I figured I'd join up.

I've had chickens (and ducks) a few times in the past, mostly Rock Bars and Rhode Island Reds. Tried doing chickens a few years ago and left the coop open one night, and a weasel came in and killed them all. (9).

So now I'm trying again. This time I have 21 Rhode Island Reds, just about 2 months old. They have a couple more weeks in the basement then they are out in their coop, with a 20x20' fenced in yard. Going to be MUCH more vigilant this time about making sure they are locked in at night.

I live out in the woods so there is A LOT of critters that can/will take them. Hopefully between me and my brother we can keep the beasts at bay! lol! Luckily I have about 8 acres of field they can free-range during the day. (When we're home.)

Looking forward to learning a bit!

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. Predators are a real pain. My dogs are great for keeping them on the run for the most part. Best of luck with your new flock.

I'm hoping my dog will help...but I'm not counting on it. He's an "indoor" dog....and a complete sissy, lol!

He's 1/2 Akita and 1/2 Shepherd, with the killer instinct of a goldfish. If I'm not outside, he just waits on the porch waiting for me to let him in, so not much help around the coop area, haha

LOL , understandable. Those goldfish personalities are priceless :) There is great info in the learning center tabs above about Predator defense techniques.

Thanks for the welcomes!

Out watching them in the yard!
