Hello,

I have 3 new Hampshire reds, Huey Duey and Louie,- I have had them since they were about a year old and I was told they were vaccinated. I've had them for about 2-3 yrs now and they are all sisters from the same flock. 2 days ago Louie started showing signs of mareks disease, her foot is curled under her, she can't balance or move and she can't fly or walk.
I had a larger silkie that passed away from mareks disease but this was 2.5 yrs ago, I cleaned everything out and these new chickens are in a brand new coop that the other chicken was never near. I am at a loss- I don't want my hen to die and have separated her from the others but I know the mortality rate of this horrible disease is at least 50%. The silkies sister a bantam survived and shows no symptoms now nor does Louie's sisters or the other chickens.
How did she get this and what can I do for her?
Currently I have her on my sofa wedged between 2 towels and sitting on a puppy pad that I change- she is eating and is not exhibiting the neurological symptoms- no head bob or anything like that -yet.

Mareks stays in the environment for years, and any chickens exposed, whether they get symptoms or not, are considered to be carriers of the disease. Sorry that your hen is sick. It might help to use some B Complex vitamins or poultry vitamins that contain riboflavin, just in case she has a vitamin deficiency. Stroke or an injury might also be considered to be possible.

X2 on Mareks staying in the yard..
A new coop wouldn't make a difference if you have already had Mareks on the land.
