new hampshire male vs rhode island in making black sex links, which pullets will lay the bigger eggs

Hello and welcome to BYC. Your question can only be correctly answered if the strain of the Red breed is known. Some were developed for eggs, some for dual purpose. Without factual knowledge, based on my RIR's I'd use Rhode Island Reds. Mine have laid a lot of Jumbo eggs and more xtra large eggs.. As they age they seem to be laying just large to xtra large.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Even if the chickens are from commercial egg laying strains, your question is nearly impossible to answer. I have found that different hatcheries produce breeds with different lay rates and egg sizes, even when the breed is the same. Furthermore, I have found that the Same hatchery produces hens that lay different size eggs when hatched in different years. For example, Welsummers. I have bought Welsummers from Privett Hatchery in 2016 and again in 2020. The hens from 2016 lay much larger eggs than the hens from 2020. However, the Welsummers from 2020 have a better lay rate. I once bought Welsummers from another hatchery and will never buy from there again, because i wasn't happy with the quality of the hens nor their eggs.

Whichever breed you choose to start out with, make note of the lay rates and egg sizes. If less than the typical average size and lay rate for whichever breed you choose, try another hatchery. Alternatively, you could purchase both breeds and see which offspring you prefer. Though I used Welsummers as an example, I keep records of All hatchery breeds that I buy, and I have purchased many different breeds through the years, including Rhode Island Reds. (I've never bought New Hampshires, because i prefer the mahogany feather color of RIRs.) Good luck in your endeavor to hatch red sexlink offspring that lay large, extra-large and even jumbo eggs!
