Hey, ever since I started raising chickens and showing them in the fair, I've always wanted Rhode Island Reds, but never got around to it. That was six years ago. Now that I've had more experience, I learned about New Hampshires, a breed that came into being through the gradual process of developments from the foundation breed of Rhode Island Reds. One of my friends has been raising and breeding chickens for a long time, and told me that she preferred the New Hampshire because they do better in exhibition.

I'm wondering if I should get get Rhode Islands or New Hampshires, and would like you guys to tell me which breed you prefer and why, based on past showmanship, breed personality, egg production, etc. I am hoping to get some next year, perhaps. Thank you in advance.

I went through a similar decision process not long ago. My daughter wants to get involved in Exhibition and we would like some eggs and meat. We decided on the New Hampshire because of their faster maturity and looks. They are a gorgeous bird and are fairly productive. Still waiting on our chicks to arrive, so I can't give you any info yet on the line that we are getting.

Just like any breed the lines differ and you gotta find one that works for you. Some lay real well, some mature fast for meat, some are in between.

If you're looking at hatchery stock then there really is not much of a difference between the two breeds. Good luck!
