New to keeping chickens and was gifted two hens today. I put them in the same coop separated by a door as I wanted them to acclimate first but didn’t have a separate coop. I noticed one of the new hens has a partially clouded left eye. She seems fine apart from that. Anyone know what it could be? How should I proceed?

The other new hen looks rough- she’s missing an eye and lots of feathers- but she also immediately tried to fight the alpha hen so I’m thinking her rough shape is due to behavior.

I attached pictures of her healthy and cloudy eye.

Welcome to BYC. It is good to keep new chickens in quarantine away from the flock for a month to monito for any signs of illness.

Then hen pictured looks to have a very dilated pupil in the right eye. The left eye looks injured, possibly a nictitating (third eyelid) injury. Can you see any bubbles, pus or gunk in that eye? I would probably clean the eye with saline or eye wash, and apply Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin into the eye 2-3 times a day. Do you think she can see out of the right eye? She might be fighting because she can’t see but shadows. Hard to know. It kind of seems like they had some fighting in the previous flock, maybe too little room or an aggressive chicken.

Thank you for replying! I didn’t notice any gunk but I will look closer tomorrow when I try the saline and neosporin. You’re right, I hadn’t noticed how dilated her right eye is! She did fly up to the roost so I think she can see. I should clarify -this- hen was not aggressive. She was actually really calm. However, the -other- hen I was given with a missing eye seemed aggressive :( hopefully she’s not the bully.
