When I was 4 years old, my parents moved from the city to the country. After 4 years in western Sonoma county, they moved to southern county to a house on 5 acres with the requisite horse barn and a "traveling band of gypsy chickens" as my dad called it.

So now my husband and I along with our 3-year old live on this little ranch along with my parents and about 4 billion ticks. So I'm thinking it's time to have some free rangers and maybe guinea fowl. I really don't want to screw it up, and usually I over analyze things. So I'm reading everything and trying to decide what kind of a coop to build and how many birds to keep. We've got no fences, 4 cats, and the predators of raccoon, fox, coyote. I don't suppose I will get the tick control I'm after without free ranging, since the tractor method will take a long time to cover all 5 acres.

Been enjoying this website very much, and I hope to understand the art better and get started with my birds before we are devoured by the 8-legged evil beasts!

I started with chickens last summer and the people of BYC have been great. This year I have tried hatching and buying chicks for even more chickeny joy. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.
