Hi! I'm new here! I'm not new to keeping chickens, though. I got my first ones at the age of 16. (which is, without saying too much, a while ago.) I grew up on a farm with no animals, and being crazy about them in general, but especially horses, I bugged my mom for one. «No way!» was understandably the answer. Then I met someone with chickens, and I asked to get some of them. My mom agreed to this. I guess she thought it was a good compromise to a horse.
I soon became hooked on these feathered friends, and before long I read every book and article I could find. I spent a few years rearing pure-breeds for sale, stopped when I went to study and started again when I got a brooding hen from someone who didn't want her. This time I started raising a handful of chicks for own consumption every year, and keeping a small number of mix-breed grown ups. And so I've been doing since.
My newest obsession is Muscovy Ducks. I tossed one in when buying some goslings (don't have them anymore) and she turned out to be the loveliest pet. I was heartbroken when she was killed by an eagle last year. I got two new adults, and this year I've hatched 3 plus 9 ducklings by incubation. They're also tame and utterly adorable.
I'm an advocate for keeping animals outside in their natural environment, and all my birds graze on big areas during daytime in summer. I'm lucky enough to live on my own farm with plenty of space.
