Hello fellow chicken enthusiasts! I am new to the BYC forum, and although I grew up having chickens, I've never raised my own flock- until now!
Currently I have a year old Dark Brahma, a two year old Buff Orpington, a two year old Ameraucana, a two year old Silver Laced Wyandotte and a two year old Rhode Island Red- all of which are hens and currently laying about an egg a day.
I couldn't wait for my chicks to get to laying age so I bought some that were already laying!!
Now to the chicks- I've got 3 different batches- 3 week olds, 2 week olds and a group that will be one week this Thursday.
My brother and I went a little overboard with the chicks, but we couldn't help ourselves! We are going to be supplying all of our family and friends with nice fresh eggs once they start laying!! It's a good thing we have plenty of room and 2 huge chicken coops already!
Anyways, here's what we have:
3 week olds-
5 Welsummers (my guess is we have one roo)
9 Jersey Black Giants (I think 3 are Roo's, we started with 10 and lost one)
2 Light Brahmas (I was told they are both girls)
2 week olds-
5 Araucanas (they all look different and I was told they are all girls)
3 Cuckoo Marans (one roo determined by feathers)
2 New Hamphshire Reds (both were sexed as girls)
Almost 1 week olds-
3 Blue Andalusians (sexed as girls)
2 Danish Brown Leghorngs (girls)
10 Red Broilers (they are going to be grass fed after they turn 3-4 weeks old, then they will be dinner)
If I mentione that they are girls, I was told that by the feed store where I got them. I only suspect the roosters based on the wing feathers at one day old. Each group has their own brooder with plenty of room.
My questions are besides waiting for them to fully develop and start to crow, how can I tell the roosters apart in each of my little chick flocks?
It would be hard to get individual pics of them all, but im going to try and get pics of the most questionable ones. Until then, can anyone tell me some sex specific traits for each breed that I could look for at their respective ages?
Im really hoping I have one Cuckoo Roo and the other two Cuckoos are hens. Other than that I would like one JBG Roo and then I will give away the other Roos.
Im trying to get two different flocks goin, each having one Roo and 13 hens. The goal Is to get some olive eggers, and then some random cool mixes.
Anyways, hope someone can help!
Thanks in advance for any help, this site has already helped me out tremendously!!
