I have so many questions

I've had my chickens for a while now and until just this week I had no idea they could have food other than chicken layer. This is how much I know.

It's good to be here. My horses have finally gotten used to them, and I haven't killed anyone yet, so I think I'm doing okay. They haven't been to hard. I've got a nice coop with a huge run for them.

I'm sure I'll drive you guys all crazy with my questions

Thank you everyone!

EmptyNest.......I have 7 hens and 1 Rooster.....and I have no idea except...the 4h kid that sold me my last 4 hens said one was a Rhode Island Red....I think the white one is an Aracauna? She lays bluish green eggs. I believe one might be a Barred Rock? She is black and white. I get only brown and blue/green eggs...no white. I'd prefer not to have white ones.....I like the blue/green and brown.

I'll figure out how to post pictures and see if you all can help me tell what breeds I have. Hopefully you can tell me exactly what I've got. I'm only in it for the eggs and of course because they make me smile

. I'd like to get a couple more hens, but now that I've read about diseases and such I'm nervous. Besides, they are more expensive to buy then I thought they would be. I paid $35 for 4 one year old hens. They are very healthy NICE hens....very friendly. Much more so than the ones I started with. We were renting a farm when we first came to Iowa last year and the guy that was renting to us gave us 4 hens. He swore they were all hens.....when I went to look at what he dropped off, they WERE NOT all hens.....one was a big beautiful Rooster! He has an irredescent green/black tail....gorgeous and nice. The other two were light red and the 3rd hen was very small and black/white speckled. We lost her to a predator of some sort.....never did find her body....but for 6 months she was the only one who laid any eggs at all. Someone told me to get some mroe hens and the other two would get jealous and start laying too. That worked! I got 4 more hens (from the 4h kid) and that very same day the original 2 started laying! Walla, lots of eggs. I get approx. 6-7 a day.

Good to be here. Hopefully you won't get sick of my dumb questions.
