I live in a 70 acre walnut orchard in northern California and put in a chicken coop last year (first time!). We started with four Rhode Island Red chicks and raised them to hens which was a blast. We hand tamed them and everything.

Two weeks ago, one got snatched up. :( She disappeared in the middle of the afternoon! No sign of feathers, no sign of an attack, no blood or bones anywhere simply -gone-. We were quite sad, and in our sorrow we decided to cheer ourselves up and buy six new baby chicks about a week ago.

The hens used to be free ranged chickens, but since one disappeared, we've been keeping them locked in the yard (I always tell them they're like Rapunzel, being locked away in a tower for their beauty. They're not buying it). I thought teenagers were good at complaining, but these hens have proved me wrong. They're bored in the yard.

Anyways, enough of that. I'm in my early 20's, play music for a living, and have become addicted to chickens. My cats are jealous.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. Sorry about your loss -Its always devastating to lose a member of the flock. Free ranging is risky but I let mine out as well. They seem happier. Congrats on your new little fuzzies - chicks are a lot of fun.
