It depends on what you are looking for in the chicken you are showing. Will you be showing the bird, the eggs, etc? Silkies, sumatras, sussex, cochins, polish, sebrights and araucans are all good chickens to show. Maran and welsummer chickens lay dark brown eggs which are popular in shows.

Welcome to BYC. You might want to check out the coops section for ideas. Many folks repurpose materials, a shed or large dog house, pick up useable materials from Rehab stores, discarded shipping pallets, large appliance crates etc. If you are handy you can put together a secure coop for much less than buying one. You might search you area
Craig's list -frequently coops are listed for very little or free and often chickens are thrown in as well.
