I have raised bantams for nearly 45 years however have not had any for about 5. I have no chickens right now but at one point my wife and I were selling Red Pyles, Fawn and Silver Duckwings, We once had a very fine Black rooster that sold for $400 at auction and was to never be picked up. It went to my wife's niece with 2 hens (which were horribly neglected) and the quality for the most part was not recognized... Not starved but certainly unappreciated due to show pigs in their presence. Long story short they were not properly protected and coons got them. A priority issue I'm thinkin but it did get her into showmanship and she received several 1st place awards before moving to showing stock and in turn resulted in the demise of those fine creatures. Looking back, I would gladly do it again because the results couldn't have turned out better for the child or spectators of the sport. I couldn't be more proud as she is to say the least, a remarkable showman. My favorite by far was a Fawn Duckwing which was hung in the incubator at some point in the night and I had to amputate its left wing. Had that not happened I judge it would have been a world class show stopper. The thing is here, these are are fine and wonderful memories which can not be bought sold or replaced at any price no matter the actual quality of the bird. My thoughts are, if you enjoy nature at its most subtle exposure you may want to build your own chicken (home) and get some of these. I think the biggest surprise to me was the individuality of each and every bird. Some aggressive, some subtle, some loud, quiet, and to tell you the truth, no 2birds even breath the same. This entertainment can not be purchased anywhere on the planet. You hav to make it happen. The very best of luck to all of you. I mean that,if I could take a piece of it out and give to everyone I would. Good for the soul...
