I started out two years ago with three barred rocks. I was allowed to buy three because they were the last ones left. Last spring I got 3 Rhode Island reds and 3 silver laced Wyandottes.

The first year my German Shepard got my favorite girl Elizabeth. She was the friendliest and the cuddler of the girls and was at my feet whenever I was outside. Naturally bc the world is cruel she’s the one who got killed. I was so so sad. Almost passed out when I saw him grab her and started screaming. My poor boyfriend came running out of the bathroom with his pants down bc he thought I was dying

Last year my kids were wanting to play with them and didn’t pay attention to the dogs being out and then went one of my Rhode Island reds.

Now today one of my Rhode Island reds is missing my favorite girl Dixie. The coop door flew open while my gsd was out and now I can’t find her or any trace of her being killed. Usually when I yell “Dixie girl” she starts chirping and running to wherever I am. I’m so sad. My chickens segregate themselves so I hope that my other three spring chicks let her into their group bc I only have one Rhode Island Red left if she doesn’t come back

Welcome!!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you're here!

If there's no evidence of Dixie being killed, I wouldn't give up hope. I think there's a decent chance she's just hiding somewhere. Restrain the dog well away from the coop, and wait it out.

A couple of months ago, I was in the shop with the dog. I didn't know it, but my Buff Orpington got over the fence of the run and was right outside the shop. The dog and I came out, and she ran right into the chicken. Instinct took over and she was after her before I could call her off. Around the back of the shop they went before the dog finally responded and came back (tail between her legs; she knew that was a no-no).

I got the dog locked up and went looking for the hen. I couldn't find her. There are woods behind the shop, and she could have been anywhere. So I left the dog locked up, and when on to something else. A few hours later, I came back to check, and sure enough, the hen was there, trying to figure out how to get back into the run and the coop.

But, no, she didn't learn. She still gets out a couple of times a week. I learned, though. I now check when coming out of the shop with the dog!

Greetings and welcome to BYC Brittany! So glad you joined us, even if the reason is a sad one. I hope you find your girl alive and well. As stated, she may be in shock and still hiding. The #1 killer of small livestock is dogs... strays, the neighbor's and YOURS. You really need to spend some time teaching your dog that the chickens are to be protected, not played with/eaten/chased/etc. GSDs are working dogs and need a job to be happy. Train it to work protecting the hens. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
