These roosters have been together for at least a year and needed urgent rehoming a couple of weeks ago. They were in one coop together and doing well, but too little space of course. Today my friends and I built them a run - essentially two existing coops with a run in between. They went from getting along great to suddenly fighting when given more space. They are separated one in each coop for now but I’m trying to figure out what we did wrong. Since the only “new” thing was giving them more space, I’m assuming that was the issue and maybe they were having a bit of a dominance battle given the opportunity to take more space? Any help? Suggestions or explanations? Ideas?

Also - they arrived upon rescue with crazy long spurs. Rest of their nails were not overly long but spurs are nuts long. Planning to trim with a dremel tool but of course that made the fight scarier. They are both uninjured but definitely I need to figure out why they fought AND make plans to deal with the long spurs.
