New Home, New Way of Life

After years of pining, my husband and I are thankful to be the new owners of two acres of land. It comes complete with a cozy little home on stilts and a shed. House and land need a ton of work and are both being swallowed up by invasive cane...not sure what it says about us as we are really excited about all the physical labor that needs to be done. It represents so much to us and is like having a home, gym, grocery store, gourmet restaurant, zoo, and entertainment center all in one place. It feels a lot like freedom.

Congrats! I'm in a similar situation. My husband and I just (this past Saturday) bought and moved to our own little acreage, with 2.28 acres. I bought the hens from the seller's tenant. The coop and chicken yard are at the back of the property. . . .i hope the neighbors aren't noticing how often I go back to talk to the hens!

Our house and property need much work, too, but it will be great as we start to get a handle on it. We have invasive goat heads and Russian olives. Hope to have our sheep here next week.

NVAnn, huge congrats to you and your husband! I went to high school in NV, and remember how bad the Russian Olives were. Best of luck in tackling them and the burrs. What sheep are you considering? We were originally thinking goats, but are now thinking maybe sheep ourselves because their milk freezes the best, and I like the idea of milking for just part of the year and freezing for the rest of the year. That is so great that your place practically came with hens.

I am buying some fine woolxDorper ewes from a friend. They are mostly for the dogs to work, as we are just getting started in sheepdog trialing, but I will use them for meat, as well.

Oh neat! Sheep dogs are so much fun to watch. That sounds like it'll be a blast. Tasty too.
