Hello, all you buk-a-roos!! Hehe, get it?? OK, I'll stop now.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family's had chickens (White Leghorns) since I was a little girl - every two years my mom had 25 chicks (that were packed like sardines in a 12" sq. box) sent from Sears & Roebuk-buk (sorry, can't help it - it's a disease
) and she'd get a call from the P.O. - "Miz Williams, your chicks are in" and we'd speed down there to get them. They'd reside in a big wooden box on a side table in our kitchen until they were feathered out enough to go in the hen house. Every two years, my dad would wring necks and we'd have chicken stew for months...
I got my first chickens up here in NH when my kids were small - about 12 years ago, maybe? Got some banties and a NH Red from poultry shows in Deerfield - she was a lovey and gave us a lot of eggs before she disappeared - got a lot of predators around here. Have a great story about one that I'll save for another thread...
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 6
(3) What breeds do you have?
Bantam Orpingtons - a black pullet (Henny Penny) and a splash cockerel (Cluckles) and 4 NH Red chicks I just picked up yesterday at a swap - they are SO darling!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I was surfing for chicken coops and this site came up - it was how I found about the swap - thank you!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to sew and am currently hooked on paper-piecing quilting - it's great therapy. I also like to do artsy stuff, garden, ride trains, shoot arrows, and read in hammocks (but not all at the same time).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a DD, 21, who's the one who hatched out the Orpingtons (in a dorm room at college - won't say where
) after getting the eggs from a breeder in PA; she kept two hens - Millie and Lucy - a Black and a Blue. I have a DS who's 17 and LOVES chickens, too. I also have a female Toy Fox Terrier, Trixie; 3 grey female cats (Kiki, C.C., & Lovey) that we got on three separate occasions, and an 11-yr-old green budgie, Lucky. I am a speech-language pathologist working with K-5 kids in a school and hope to do a unit on hatching and raising chickens next spring with my students - aside from the math, science, social studies, and language-learning experience it would expose the kids to some animal husbandry and maybe incubate (sorry, again
) a desire to raise chickens when they get older!
