We have been planning on pet chickens for 2 yrs now, and next weekend it will become a reality.
I'm so excited and so are my teens.
It all started when I got to play with my aunts chickies. and my heart melted. Like melted bad. So I started reading. and reading. and reading. oh, and asking questions. I think my aunt may be tired of them all.
I have been having my teens research also, as they are the real push to get our own.
We hadn't even decided yet what kind we wanted when we got a call from my partners daughter...She's coming to visit Easter weekend, and bringing 4 chickies. I still don't know what kind. When I asked her, her reply was IDK? Chickens?
I only know they just hatched last week.
I ended up with a pile of wood in the shed, and piles of paper with sketches for a coop, making it just what I want, but hadn't started building it yet. I had decided on an A frame style. Yesterday a friend called and said hey you want this big dog house. It's perfect for a start. I've already started sawing and building and modifying to make it absolutely perfect.
We do have a pen set up in the basement with a heat lamp for the babies when they get here.
We will have the coop built by Thursday I think.
We have a secure run built(has to be secure we have dog and cat type critters to), the coop will be attached to it.
I know I still need to pick up some food, there's a feed store just down the road, as well as something to put it in and a waterer.
Any hints, tips, tricks, run now before you're hooked bad, you're insane, etc?
Three hens is actually our limit inside the city. When they are big enough to know who's a hen and who's a rooster one(or more if we end up with multiple roosters) will be going to a neighbor to take out to his parents.
We really don't care about eggs, meat etc. pets are what they will be ultimately.
