Welcome to BYC scollier. It sounds like you're already enjoying your chickens... and so is the 7 year old. That's great!
I agree with the others, a run and coop are in your very near future to protect those chooks. Temporarily, make sure they have overhead cover to run to when the hawks are out. I free range mine at time and those girls often detect the hawk before I do. Somewhere safe and protected at night is also very important.
