Hiya, I've been doing a lot of extensive research on chickens and pigeons and my browsing lead me to this site. I joined mostly for the help of the community and (hopefully) maybe potential sellers of some of these birds of my interest.

I'm having some trouble on deciding whether or not I should get a chicken, or a pigeon. I'm a beginner in bird keeping so having a hardy and easy to keep bird would help.

Also a quick mention that i'm currently living in Japan...

Hi Welcome to Backyard Chickens well stay with a parakeet or pigeon then as chickens are social creature

ah okay

what kind of pigeon though? i'm looking at parlor rollers and Portuguese tumbler pigeons (as well as homing) but i'm having a hard time finding breeders..

It is great having you here!

I would get chickens--They lay nice sized eggs

Agreed with Penny. Chickens AND pigeons are flock animals. If you do not provide them with a flock, they are going to be engaging in some destructive behaviors, including SELF destructive behaviors. If you want a bird, get a parakeet, or perhaps a cockatiel or small parrot, but only if you are around enough to give the bird the company and attention they crave. Other option might be some finches or a canary or two.

i'm looking for some birds that could probably sit on my finger and wouldn't mind being held. Something maybe that requires medium to low maintenance?

Parakeet. I had a very friendly one. Male, he would fly around the room, land on shoulder or head, loved attention. I gave him a little toy box full of little beak sized trinkets and he loved to carry them all around the kitchen table. He said "pretty bird". My sister had a female parakeet who was also very friendly. She had a huge vocabulary, and actually made up a few words of her own. She would often say, "You're so pretty!" or "You're precious". Then she'd get a bit mixed up and say, "you're so prettyous!" She'd also say, "Wanna come out?"

how big of a cage should I get? would it be fine if it was by itself or should I get two?
