hi, dave here.....new to the backyard.....
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? - i've had chickens for a couple years, my newest 1 year old flock from murray mcmurray.....i have 14 chickens and 13 different breeds: silver laced wynadottes, red campine, egyptian fayoumas, 2 polish crested, 2 cochins, and many others.....
my hobbies are the chickens, i did meat birds a couple times, bee keeping, cheese making, composting worms, making a solar food dehydrator, perfecting composting or trying to, greenhouse and season extension in vermont, attempting permaculture and forest garden techniques, growing grains like wheat, barley and oats, grinding my own wheat for bread, canning, root cellaring, yogurt making, and gardening everything under the sun: veggies of all types - incorporating more perrenial edibles and apple trees, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and plans for pears, plums and grapes next year....basic homesteading stuff......
one of my greatest delimma's is how to free range my flock on 1/4 acre in a neighborhood with their current dirt run into an easily moveable pen (chicken fencing) where they won't fly out (as 2 do before i put chicken wire over the 5 foot fence) and they will have shade??
I have an idea with my chicken tractor to move them in that in the morning and drag it along to a new spot where the fencing is laid out with putting shade tarps and nest boxes in the chicken tractor for them to get used to......
any comments or suggestions would be helpful!!
thanks dave......
