We have recently moved to a more rural area and I can now have a few chickens. I am thinking about 3-5 hens for eggs. I am now doing my research and planning. I do have a shaded area to place a coop and run. One of my big concerns is the number of feral cats in the area. To be honest I dont know enough to ask and intelligent question. I would love to meet others in my area and learn from you. I am retired/disabled. My background is as a glassblower, I also do fiber as a medium, from raw fleece through to finished item. It may be late summer before I get a coops set up, and I am also starting from scratch here with putting in raised bed gardens. I think its going to be a busy summer for us.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

I note you mention you are in upstate SC but if you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. A couple which may be of interest to you at this stage are:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
