Hi! After lurking for awhile..I decided to join. I had one rooster, hank, and two hens...then in may I got four baby chicks, they were so cute..we have now introduced them all..they share a coop, and free range during the day. Yesterday while we were not home, something got two of my babies...it was during the day! I thought it might have been a hawk, but two baby pullets hens were gone! Small amount of feathers in two different places. We have a little over an acre, on all three sides are (very tall) corn fields...the four babies (almost three months old)... Would hang out in the corn field..I thought thy were safe from hawks while in there...and the other three...hanks and he girls..would be all over the yard, under decks, under porches, under pines trees...I am sick over losing two babies...I don't know what got them...today while walking in the Corn field, my husband found the feathers from one..so it couldnt have been a hawk. He wouldn't have taken her in the corn...we have no dogs around us...it was late morning, early afternoon...now I am afraid to let them roam.....sorry to introduce myself on such a sad note....I am so sad about losing them....and you guys understand.....

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. Sorry about your loss. Ive had that happen a couple times as well but even people that don't free range lose birds to predators. Predators are crafty & will take what they can. Best of luck with your flock :)

! Pleased you joined us!! Sorry to hear about your losses. I'd predict fox or coyote. They can get right up close in a cornfield. Might want to consider ranging them a little closer to home. Good luck to you!

That is horrible. Hawks sometimes pass thru and circle the yard. Happened to a friend in Indiana few miles from Chicago. The hawk would circle and watch his puppys. We have falcons here also to keep the pigeons under control but they are not big enough to grab larger chickens maybe younger ones.

Have you ever seen hawks there? Rare here only seen two in 40 years in Chicago over my area ...Southside by the white sox..... You try the predator section here yet?

I have seen hawks.. :( I don't know if a hawk would get them and then take them in 12 ft high corn...I keep hoping June got scared and ran into the corn, since we only found a small amount of her feathers...but it's the second night now...we are planning on building a bigger run....maybe they will have to stay in there...no free range....

Any tracks? I have heard trail cams helping figure out whats walking around at night. But they will continue to go after easy prey until they arenot easy anymore. Put them in there run for there own good
