Hi, I have just moved my quail from their summer outdoor house to their winter residence, in a clean hutch, and this morning I found a REALLY strange egg. It was in the shape of a large poop, black in colour, very thick shell, but contained a murky coloured egg. I've never had this happen before, it almost looked as though it could have been a soft shelled egg that took forever to pass in the quail.
Any ideas/ tips please.

The thing is I have had a few eggs that are fresh but a funny off colour. Anyone know more about this?

Thanks HeritageGoose13. There is nothing that people on here cannot answer. Very interesting but OH! That was not so nice to look at with my breakfast! It looks similar in shape, except inside was a real egg yolk and white.... the yolk was murky and more mustard colour than a healthy yellow colour. But from reading the info a second time, this could indeed be a lash egg..... I've never come across it before. Now to sort out which poor bird is laying them...

Was it anything like this?

The egg was normal inside but the coating on the outside was very thick and black like it got stuck in the hen's paint department too long. The white marks are toe nail scratches on the surface of the thick stuff. The egg to the right of it was the next day's egg and the one on the bottom the second day from the same hen. She hadn't laid in a few weeks after a move so as you can see it took her oviduct a couple of days before she was laying her normal lightly speckled eggs.

HI Sill, Very interesting colours you got there! Your eggs there look in good condition compared to what I found! It was like a hardened black poo, with an discoloured egg inside...not a nice description, but basically what I got. I thought it was a poo until it oozed egg..... .
