I have a forum etiquette question: if I have a question that others have answered, but I want to ask clarifying questions, is it ok to piggyback on someone else’s post (to keep knowledge bundled together) or should I make my own post (so other people aren’t getting notifications about things they don’t care about).

I would assume, that if someone had replied, they would be interested in your question also. If you are asking for clarification, I don't think there is anything wrong with asking on someone else's thread.
