HI all,

Name is LJ. live in WA State. I grew up on a farm w all sorts of animals- including chickens, but its been about 20 years since I raised chicks.

I'm just out side city limits w 5 acres. Besides the chicks, we have some sheep as well.

Starting with 7 this year. I have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Wyandotts, 2 Legghorns and 1 Barred Rock.

They are approx 8-9 weeks old. We have been in a heat wave, but the girls are handling it ok. Thanks to the advice of frozen fruits/Ice Cups.

Love the message board, great source of info and gathering ideas.

Oh my, YES, the heat. My son lives in Washington and said he's been going through 90 degree days . Apparently a lot of folks don't think it is necessary to have air conditioning - so he is making do with fans.

Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock

Hi LJ, welcome to BYC!

Glad to hear the message boards have already been helpful in giving you ideas on keeping your chickens cool. We deal with heat (and humidity) a lot down here in FL. In addition to the cooling treats, a few things we do for our girls are:
* Extra waterers (with frozen bottles of water inside the waterers)
* Lots of shade, natural & man-made
* Box fan in the coop, not to blow directly on them but to circulate the air
* Spray the run floor down 2-3 times during the day (some use a misting system)
* Try not to get them excited during the heat of the day
* Spots where they can dig down to take dust baths
* Large shallow pans they can wade in (some use kiddy swimming pools, our girls won't)

Good luck with your flock, if you have questions, feel free to ask. There is a lot of information available here and many, many helpful members.

Nice to have you join us and welcome back to chickens!
