New Member - 7 new chicks arrive soon

Hello! Thank you for the Join. This seems to be a well moderated, safe and friendly place, to share ideas and other chicken-related information.. I may be new as a member but not to this wonderful site, as I have been here often. We live in Virginia and my husband and I (73/72) got our first 6 chickens four years ago when our son literally walked in the house with them from Tractor Supply. He didn't even know what type they were. We were not happy. But, long story short, a coop was built with a large pen and we quickly fell in chicken-love with all six (and, forgave our son). Now, four years later we have three hens left: BettyWhite (Barred Plymouth Rock), Laverne and Shirley (both Rhode Island Reds). We miss greatly and with much sadness, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia.

In two days we should receive 7 new chicks from McMurray Hatchery. New breeds we have not had before but were the only ones available (2 Delaware, 2 Red Star, 2 Buff Orpington, and one Black Cochin). It was quite odd ordering chicks on-line. I did choose to have them vaccinated for Marek's Disease and Coccidosis. Only 20 cents per vaccine and I really could find no reason not to do it. I am unsure if the first chicks were vaccinated or not.

We do realize this is a whole new game in that we will eventually be introducing this new flock to our old flock. We are educating ourselfves as we try to wrap our brains around it. Trying to do all the right things.

Our son still comes weekly to do all the yucky work associated with chicken care. He's paid in eggs!😁

We are feeling like expectant parents right now.
I absolutely love my one Delaware chicken. She is the smartest by far in my flock. She minds her own business and never pecks any other chickens. Doesn’t like to be petted but will sit in my lap. She’s the best!
