Hi I'm from New Zealand and my hubby and 2 boys are building our first chicken coop. It is 2.3mtrs long and 1.3mtrs wide.
We have built a large house which is about a 1/3 of the whole coop.
700

My question is do we have to build the roosting box as an added extra or can we divide the house area into a roosting box and a perch area (sorry my terminology may not be quite right)
Also how many should we get, they will have a large part of the garden to roam around during the day
I attach a photo at the beginning stage with a hope it will make more sense
Thanks in advance

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You will need 4 to 5 square feet per bird in the coop to keep them from hurting and injuring each other and 10 square feet per bird in the run for the same reason. Chickens turn on each other very easily when cramped and can even kill one another. So if this is your space, ad as many birds to fit into the space requirements.

Since you have small spaces, you can use external nest boxes by cutting a hole in the side of the coop and attaching the box or boxes from the inside.

Stop by our coops pages to get some idea on how to fashion your coop....https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

Good luck on this new adventure and if you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!
