Hello! I'm James in northern Illinois, south of I80 in the small towns, woods, and cornfields. I'm currently raising 41 chicks at nearly 6 weeks and 4 that I'm guessing are almost a week and a half. 14 straight run bielefelders (cackle still sent 7&7 despite autosex), 13 straight run black colorec Black Jersey Giants, 7 SLWyandotte pullets and 7 & 1/2 Dominique pullets. The half is because I went for feed at tractor supply Friday and they had 1 Dominique pullet and 3 GLWyandotte "pullets" left for $1 each. The dom has dark legs, so probably right on it! New chicken owner but had researched about every breed that is listed on wikipedia a couple years ago, wrote out lists and decided on these dual purpose breeds recently. It was over a two month wait, but I got what I really wanted all hatched and shipped same day!

The smaller dom below got injured and is now being kept company in an overwatch brooder nearby! Her and a Bielefelder cockerel were undersize, weak, and laying around a lot so I gave them both boiled egg yoke & also sugar water and they came back to life. A normal, active Black Giant died suddenly a few weeks ago so I treated with corid and then gave them acv and nutri drench in water, just in case. They were started with livestock tetracycline in water.

Thanks, guys! I did a whole lot of research here long before I ordered chicks and a lot more while I was waiting for them to hatch. Other than my buddy that farms chickens (my buddy's dad), I have learned mostly from searching this forum! I usually searched for the question and added "backyard chickens" to the search. Much more reliable than new "experts" on Facebook with years of information to learn from!

Welcome to BYC, and congratulations on your flock. You have some very interesting breeds.
I knew that I wanted to do dual purpose with good egg laying. All breeds are generally decent winter egg layers for my upper midwest climate, especially wyandottes. Just as an experiment, I'd like to use the Black Giant roos across Dominique and Bielefelder roos across Wyandotte to see what I get crossing those crosses after hybrid vigor. I can also do some pure bieles and giants.. A good winter layer, good temperament, good meat & eggs, dominant rose comb for cold, breeding for autosex, good roos for predators, less heart attacks like I read occasionally stories about bieles, etc would be great! Adding a little more wyandotte back into bieles might do it, but I think the genetics in all those crosses are fascinating!
