Hi - I’m Craig and my wife Anne and I have 4 hens: Lily an Americana, and Meryl a Brahma are 6 1/2 years old, and Lucy a Buff Orpington and Opal a Barred Rock are 1 1/2 years old. The older girls layed this summer (though Lily may be done now). We really enjoy their individual personalities - Meryl is head chicken, though Lucy doesn’t put up with her much. Opal loves to stand in the water dish, and Lily is the under chicken (and we love her blue eggs, which are the largest).

Girls have been healthy, but I am a bit worried about Opal. The last 4 days or so, her poo has looked abnormal to me, and consistently so (at least for over night poo on the poop board).

I looked on https://chat.allotment-garden.org/?topic=17568.0 and found a picture which is similar to her poo which they indicated is abnormal - Clostridium perfringens?

So I was wondering if anyone here had any thoughts about this. Thanks a lot!

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I have a BO named Lucy too! She is almost 4 years old. I sure hope Opal will be okay. One of the ER experts will come along and help you out. If not, post your question in the ER section. I wish I could help, but I don't have any experience with this.

BTW, where are you? Here in the USA most of us are busy with Thanksgiving, so replies might be a bit slow today. I'm just having a cup of Joe before I get started on our dinner. I prepared a bunch of stuff yesterday, so just the turkey and spuds to do for the most part.

Thanks for your reply - quite a Lucy coincidence - our Lucy is named for Lucille Ball. We are in Portland Oregon, and yeah not the best day to get responses, but chickens don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, so what can you do. Thanks for the tip on the ER section.

Yeah, ours too! Originally we had Lucy and Ethel, both BO's. We are just a little north of you in WA.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Definitely post pics in our Emergency section. Lots of reasons a bird will have diarrhea...worms, bacterial or fungal infections, viruses, even feed and weather changes can have them not feeling well. Good luck and I hope all is well!
