Hello everyone. I'm RickyDean, my wife and I live in Oklahoma on the border with Texas.

I have always wanted my own chickens so the other day when I was in a farm supply store, I saw their new chicks and brought 6 home with me. 3 were yellow and 3 were black but
the young kid helping me couldn't tell me anything about them including what breed they were. I bought from the tub saying all female chickens, and next to it was a tub of straight run chicks.

A week late at another type of farm supply store I purchased 6 more chicks that this time were each labeled in seperate pens. So I bought 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Road Island Reds and 2 Buff Orphingtons.

My grand parents always had 50-70 chickens on their farm when I was growing up and they kept us supplied every Wed. Night with fresh eggs and a fryer or two. Since their passing I have always wanted a farm rasied chicken to eat and my brother and SIL built a coop and started their own flock. They have given us fresh eggs and a couple fryers but because we live so far apart we don't get them very often. My wife fried up one of their chickens and my youngest son couldn't believe how much better it tasted compared to store bought chicken. Such a hugh difference in taste!

For now though, we will raise hens just for laying and later on, add some birds for meat.

So now I think I have 5 BR's, 2 RIR's 2 BO's and the first 3 yellow chicks are turning somewhat white in different areas and someone said they might be white leghorns but I hope later on I can make a positive ID.

In the process of building a small coop 4' x 6' and 4' high.

Love this site and I am hoping to do a lot of reading and learning from all the friendly
people here.

Welcome to BYC. If you keep them all you will need a bigger coop. Each bird requires 4-5 sq.feet inside the coop not counting nest boxes or roosts. In the outdoor run, each bird should have 10 sq.feet. When chickens are too crowded they end up bullying, feather plucking, and sometimes even cannibalism

Thank you all for the welcome! Yes, after readingg about coop space I have decided
To go bigger with an add on to my coop I'm building. Since I added 6 chicks I see I need
more room for them all. Shouldn't be too hard to extend the length since I am at the
framing part of building. I did have the floor already made but can just add on to its length.
How ever my nesting boxes will not be centered now but to the side of the long wall of
the coop. Dont think that should be a problem though should it?

Again, thank you for the welcome.

Hello again, Ricky, and welcome to BYC! I am also pretty new, and the folks here have been super helpful - so make yourself at home!
As to the nest boxes being off-center, I fought with my design until I could get it centered, which resulted in one oversize nest box for me - but truth be told, I don't think the chickens will care if the box is centered or not.

Ultimately, it's going to be a matter of personal preference.
Looking forward to seeing pics!

You're welcome. Having the nesting boxes to the side won't be a problem. The chickens won't care whether they are centered or not.)
