Hello, all,

Just joined the site and want to get myself introduced.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I helped to feed chickens on a farm as a child, but I’m new to raising them myself. Plan to get a few chicks soon.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, but going to start with three to keep it simple.

(3) What breeds do you have?
N/A

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Partly for the adventure of it, but also self-sufficiency.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Growing veggies, cultivating carnivorous plants, painting, writing fiction.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
It’s just me and my wife, three rescue mutts, and I’m a professional writer.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Learned about BYC via Reddit. I’ve been lurking for a week or so to get a feel for the community and it seems like a great place to learn and interact with like-minded folks.

I hope this is a good start. I’ll be asking dumb questions soon, so please take it easy on me!

Any suggestions on good starter breeds?

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

What breed you get depends what you want in the end...pets, meat, eggs, yard ornaments, etc.

Here's an article a member wrote summarizing several breeds.

Here's a section in BYC where people rated chicken breeds:

We're glad you're here!
Thanks so much! I’m looking mostly for eggs at the moment, but may expand to meat later.

I appreciate the links!

Good to know. I’m in North Florida, so I’ll look for warm weather (and possibly hurricane-proof) breeds. 🙂
No hurricane-proof breeds exist! Sorry.

I would focus on lighter bodied breeds with large combs like breeder quality Leghorns, Minorcas and Anconas. Rocks can also do well in the heat.
