Hey folks. My husband and I are only in the research phases right now and haven't gotten chickens yet. We live on the side of a small mountain/ foothill in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA. It's almost completely wooded, so right now we're trying to figure out where to put a coop. And, when to start. I assume spring, so we don't freeze any chickens. We have lots of predators out here, so we really want to build a quality coop that will protect the chickens. We also want to put a garden near it. We only plan to get layers, and the husband wants some kind of chicken that "makes rainbow eggs".

If you want a chicken that lays rainbow eggs, I recommend getting an Americana. I have 5 Americanas, and they lay the most beautiful eggs, so full of color!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

I have a mixed flock of basques, EE's, Marans, Delawares and Jaerhons and love the multi-colored eggs.

If predators are likely spend some effort into building a really good run - buried wire, hardware cloth, and covered top. You will not ever regret it.

Wow- talk about some quick responses! Thanks folks. We'll be using this forum more and more when we start our coop. I see there is thread just on americanas- I'll check it out. And thanks for the advice folks!

Do your research, make plans, and then get your chickens. That is the logical and organized way to do things. I commend you. Welcome to BYC.
