Good morning and
welcome-byc.gif
I'm not far from you! Congrats on your 1st 2 eggs!!! Chickens all lay at different times. Most of mine lay around 10am-12pm.

It is fine to wait until evening to collect the eggs. We have even skipped a day here or there due to lack of time. So, you can collect the eggs the next day as well. As long as they are not too old and it's not too cold out. In the winter here you will find, the eggs HAVE to be collected quite frequently as they will freeze and bust in our climate.

What type of chickens do you have? How many? How long have you been keeping chickens?

Welcome to BYC!

Our birds lay anytime between 6:30am and 4:00pm usually. It takes on average about 25 hours for an egg to reach the point of being laid so if you have a girl lay at 10:00am one day, the next day it will be a bit later (that's if she lays one the next day). Our one EE only lays about 4 eggs per week so her eggs seem to show up about any time of day.

I collect eggs at least a couple times a day. One of our girls isn't careful about not breaking the egg she lays...she's not an egg eater, she's just a bit lame and will accidently sometimes tromp all over them. Broken egg in a nesting box makes a mess of any other eggs there and will attract ants. Plus, there was that one time I found a small snake trying to swallow a big egg. That's enough to make you keep an eye on the nesting boxes! You'll find everyone does things a bit differently and you'll figure out what works best for you.

Congratulations, it's nice to have you here!

We have 6 rhode island red. They were about 4 days old when we got them mid April. Pretty exciting taking them from dog cage in the house to coop built by hubby. Pretty much learning as we go. Alot of reading. Thanks for all the info

I'd check more frequently, if there are soft shelled eggs or any cracked ones - that temps chickens to become egg eaters - a bad habit to break.
