Hello y'all! I am new to BYC and wanted to introduce myself and my new flock.
I am new to chickens and was given 28 straight run 1 day old chicks 6 weeks ago
I have 12 pullets and 1 cockerel, sent all of the cockerels back except for my Roo Roo.
All are Barred Rocks.
I am learning that the chickens have wonderful distinct personalities, and I will enjoy fresh eggs and wonderful compost for my raised bed garden.
I enjoy gardening, canning, papercrafts (making greeting cards mostly), reading, cooking and baking.
We currently have a spoiled Chihuahua, a spoiled Min Pin, and a spoiled Chinchilla. I am currently busy at home most days.
I found BYC through Google about 4 weeks ago, and started reading some threads to get answers and solutions to my questions/problems. I decided to join because of the wonderful information and that the site has a lot of traffic, nothing stale here
Now, let me tell you about my chickens!!!
I raised 28 chicks to 4 weeks old and then sent all of the cockerels back except for my favorite Roo Roo. I hated to see them go but I am not quite ready for meat birds.
My adult daughter and I have named them all and it is getting harder to tell them apart, may have to get color coded leg bands. There are several we can tell by their personalities. We have a Towanda, because she is crazy, does the unexpected always, lol. Then there is Medea, she will face down Roo Roo every time, no backing down. Next is Big Bertha, she is the largest. The two smallest are Penny and Lucy. Weezer is kind of standoffish, and does her own thing. And rounding out the flock are June, Goober, Flossie, Thelma, Louise, and Pepper.
They are 6 weeks old today and I heard Roo Roo practicing his cock-a-doodle doo for the first time this morning!!!
I still have them in a 4x8 brooder in my basement. I have a small hoop coop 5x8 outside ready for them but with the heat and thunderstorms I have delayed putting them outside. Maybe in a few days....
Roo Roo standing and waiting for me to pick him up!

Sorry for the long intro, I am super excited to be here and have LOTS of questions!!
Thanks!
