Hello everyone! We purchased 7 hens for our granddaughter about a month ago. Two are already laying & the other 5 are about 6 months old. All was well til' one of the laying hens began stretching her neck out & making a wheezing noise. Feed store gave us duramyacin (sp.?) & said to give it to all of them for 7 days in their water The sick hen died by morning. It's been 4 days & all the others appear to be fine. We are so attached to all of them & don't wanna lose anymore. Any preventative measure suggestions?

Is there an avian vet in your area? Do you still have the deceased hen? My first thought is a parasite called gapeworm, but a vet would be able to tell you for sure, especially if you still have her. I hope the others stay healthy!

Hello and welome to BYC! Sorry to hear about your hen. It may have ben gape worm or something stuck in her throat. It would be good if you can have a vet have a look at her. If you still have her.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Good suggestions above

Hello all and thank you for the warm welcome and helpful advice. Happy to report all 6 hens are doing well :) In the process of building a new coop for them. They will be close to our goats and horses so I was wondering what you all think about giving them alfalfa? I see mixed reviews on it. Some say yes and others no.
