Hi everyone! My husband and I just got our first chicks! We have eight, three week old Gold Stars. We are very excited and are having a blast with them so far. Right now we are using a 100 gallon horse water container for our brooder until my husband builds a bigger one for them in the next few weeks. We have enjoyed looking at everyone's pictures.

Is it common for the chicks to jump on top of their water container and look like they are trying to figure a way out?
In a few more weeks its going to start getting really warm should we use a fan during the day to keep them cool? One more question at 6 weeks are they old enough to move the brooder from the garage to our covered patio full time? Thank-you for your help!

chicks like to roost on things higher up as soon as they are able, and that leads to hopping out of brooders if there is no wire top to stop them. I don't know what your weather is like but, I imagine at 6 weeks they will be fully feathered and ready to move to your patio. If you go to the Where am I, where are you forum - you can find your state thread and post there. That way people who experience your weather can provide details on dealing with it. Also you may find other chickeners in your local area.

Thank-you. I'll put a perch in tomorrow. I made a lid this evening for them, it isn't as pretty or sturdy as my hubby can make but he wasn't home from work so I went on and did it. It is made out of wood with a screen fabric hopefully it will work until this week-end.
